Union Bank Plaza is a PEZA-accredited skyscraper mainly used for office space. It has a typical floor plate of 1,298 square meters. Originally named World Finance Plaza, the project was initially developed by Megaworld Properties. However, Union Properties Inc., the real estate arm of Union Bank, took over the entire project around 1998 or 1999.
Architectural firms Recio + Casas Architects and RTKL Associates designed Union Bank Plaza in the postmodernism style. The shape of Union Bank Plaza is too complicated to be described with simple geometric terms. It can be divided into two parts: the podium and the tower. The podium comprises the lower levels. It is a cube with a beige concrete facade with horizontal slits for windows, indicative of parking spaces. On the other hand, the tower looks like a tall rectangular prism with two smaller rectangular prisms stacked on top. Then, this shape is intersected by three rectangular prisms with round corners at a 45-degree angle on different levels. The top of the structure has an octagonal cross-sectional shape. The tower’s facade has alternating horizontal bands of blue glass panels and beige concrete. The overall form of the building looks like a wine bottle.
The Union Bank Plaza stands within the northwestern section of Ortigas Central Business District with frontages on three roads: Meralco Avenue, Onyx Street, and Sapphire St. To reach Union Bank Plaza, you can use a jeepney traversing Meralco Avenue or a jeepney or a bus plying Ortigas Avenue. The best place to alight the PUV (public utility vehicle) along Ortigas and Meralco avenues is on Emerald Avenue or Ruby Road, respectively. Pedestrian footbridges can be found adjacent to these roads in case you disembark on the side opposite Union Bank Plaza. For those who wish to bring their own car, the entrance to the building’s parking space is on Onyx Road.
